By default, Microsoft Word automatically saves your document every 10 minutes in case something happens to the computer while working on a document. To change this setting, follow the steps below.

Microsoft Word 2010

  1. Click File and then Options.
  2. Click Save
  3. Increase or decrease the AutoRecover option.

Jun 29, 2018 Of course, before you learn how to open Word autosave location on Windows 10, you must know how to activate the feature first. You can do that by following the instructions below: Launch Word, then click File. Select Options, then click Save on the left-pane menu. Make sure that the ‘Save AutoRecover information’ option is selected. Word for Office 365, Word 2019, Word 2016, and Word 2013: Select File, then Options, and then Advanced. Scroll down to the Save section and select Always create backup copy. Word 2010: Select File, then Options. In the Save tab, select Always create backup copy. Go to the Save tab and look for the ‘AutoRecover file location’ field. Click browse and select a folder that is located inside your Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive folder. The added advantage of having MS Word save the auto recovery file to a cloud drive is that it’s backed up to more than one location i.e., it’s saved to a local.

To change the default location for AutoRecover files, click “Browse” to the right of the “AutoRecover file location” edit box. On the “Modify Location” dialog box, navigate to the location where you want AutoRecover files saved and click “OK”. To close the “Word Options” dialog box, click “OK”. Thankfully, it’s still possible to recover unsaved Word documents by using AutoRecover. Word saves AutoRecover files every 10 minutes, making it possible for users to recover a closed Word document that hasn’t been saved properly. You can also change the frequency in options. Launch the Word, open the File menu and select Options.

Do you mean there is no files under the AutoRecover folder? Actually, if you Word document is closed by accident without saving, you will get the recovery version in the Document Recovery pane, when you open the document next time.

    hi
when I follow your guide my recovery filr does not open with word !! what can I do ?
    • To post as a guest, your comment is unpublished.
If Word won't recover the autosaved file, do this:
      1. Make a copy of the .asd file
      2. Rename the file and change .asd to .doc
(If a dialogue box appears, warning that changing a filename extension might cause the file to become unusable, and you are asked if you are sure you want to change it, click 'Yes')
      3. Open the file with Word and save it with a more meaningful filename.

Hi. I'm having problem about one file that I made.
My desktop restarted all of a sudden so when I opened it again, along the left side of the word 2007 window was the autorecovery files. I clicked on it and saved the file.
So I continued my work and finished it and clicked save. When I tried to open it, it's not even in the folder where I had it saved.
I tried doing the word options trick but I still can't find it. I tried to search .asd files and found it but it says it has been moved. Now I have no idea where to find it.
    Any suggestions? Thanks
