This page describes how to install and uninstall JDK 8 for OS X computers.

SDKMan can run on any UNIX-based platforms such as Mac OSX, Linux, Cygwin, Solaris, and FreeBSD, and we can install it using the following commands. You can use the command sdk default java. When you download the Java Development Kit (JDK), the associated Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is installed at the same time. The JavaFX SDK and Runtime are also installed and integrated into the standard JDK directory structure. Depending on your processor, the downloaded file has one of the following names: jdk-7u-macosx-amd64.dmg. On Windows, Java ME SDK 3.0 is the successor to the popular Java Wireless Toolkit 2.5.2 and Java Toolkit 1.0 for CDC. It integrates CLDC, CDC and Blu-ray Disc Java (BD-J) technology into one SDK. The Java ME SDK 3.0 is now available for Windows XP and Vista 32-bit, and for the Mac OS.

System Requirements

Observe the following requirements:

• Any Intel-based computer running OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or later.

• Administrator privileges.

Note that installing the JDK on OS X is performed on a system wide basis, for all users, and administrator privileges are required. You cannot install Java for a single user.

Installing the JDK also installs the JRE. The one exception is that the system will not replace the current JRE with a lower version. To install a lower version of the JRE, first uninstall the current version as described in 'Uninstalling the JRE'.

JDK Installation Instructions

When you install the Java Development Kit (JDK), the associated Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is installed at the same time. The JavaFX SDK and Runtime are also installed and integrated into the standard JDK directory structure.

Depending on your processor, the downloaded file has one of the following names:

• jdk-8uversion-macosx-amd64.dmg

• jdk-8uversion-macosx-x64.dmg

Where version is 6 or later.

1. Download the file.

   Before the file can be downloaded, you must accept the license agreement.

2. From either the Downloads window of the browser, or from the file browser, double click the .dmg file to launch it.

   A Finder window appears containing an icon of an open box and the name of the .pkg file.

3. Double click the package icon to launch the Install app.

   The Install app displays the Introduction window.

   
   

   Note: In some cases, a Destination Select window appears. This is a bug, as there is only one option available. If you see this window, select Install for all users of this computer to enable the Continue button.

   
   

4. Click Continue.

   The Installation Type window appears.

5. Click Install.

   A window appears that says 'Installer is trying to install new software. Type your password to allow this.'

6. Enter the Administrator login and password and click Install Software.

   The software is installed and a confirmation window appears.

8. After the software is installed, delete the .dmg file if you want to save disk space.

Determining the Default Version of the JDK

If you have not yet installed Apple's Java OS X 2012-006 update, then you are still using a version of Apple Java 6 that includes the plug-in and the Java Preferences app. See 'Note for Users of OS X that Include Apple Java 6 Plug-in'.

There can be multiple JDKs installed on a system, as many as you wish.

When launching a Java application through the command line, the system uses the default JDK. It is possible for the version of the JRE to be different than the version of the JDK.

You can determine which version of the JDK is the default by typing java -version in a Terminal window. If the installed version is 8u6, you will see a string that includes the text 1.8.0_06. For example:

Uninstalling the JDK

To uninstall the JDK, you must have Administrator privileges and execute the remove command either as root or by using the sudo(8) tool.

For example, to uninstall 8u6:

Do not attempt to uninstall Java by removing the Java tools from /usr/bin. This directory is part of the system software and any changes will be reset by Apple the next time you perform an update of the OS.

Working at home has lots of benefits and I recommend youdo download the Java SDK and BlueJ if you have a computer at home. Thereare many steps involved in this and will take about an hour if you have a high speedinternet connection. If you are using a 28.8kbs or 56kbs connectionthe download time will be several hours. The Java 2 SDK is 30 megabytes,the documentation is 23 megabytes and BlueJ is 1 megabyte.

Pick the appropriate link. I will talk through what to do if you are usingWindows. If you are using a Macintosh click herefor a page withexcellent instructions on how to download and install Java for the Mac. Ifyou are using Linux I assume you don't need much help and you can just click onthe Linux download and follow the instructions from their.

To download and install the Java 2 SDK for Windows.

1. From the page java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html click on the Microsoft Windows link on the top right hand side of the page.
2. Read through the terms and conditions page and press the 'Accept' button if you accept the terms and conditions of the license agreement. (Note section 2 which states 'You acknowledge that Software is not designed, licensed or intended for use in the design, construction, operation or maintenance of any nuclear facility. ' Earlier versions of Java include restrictions on using Java for software intended 'for use in on-line control of aircraft, air traffic, aircraft navigation or aircraft communications.')
3. Pick the FTP site you want to use to download the file. I recommend one of the US central sites. If you have trouble downloading via FTP click on the HTTP download which should work, but will be slower.
4. It took me two and a half minutes to download the file with my connection in the CS department. (Your results may vary.) When you are done you will have the file j2sdk1_4_1-rc-windows-1586.exe on your computer in whatever location you installed it.
5. To install the file follow the instructions at java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/install-windows.html
   You should be able to skip step 1. To start the process you need to find the icon of the downloaded file using Windows Explorer or by navigating to the icon through the My Computer icon. Just double click on the file icon which should look like this:
   This will unpack and launch the installer program for the Java 2 SDK.
6. Follow the steps on the installer and from the page listed in step 9 to complete the install. Be particularly careful when modifying your autoexec.bat file. Follow the steps on the Java instruction page very closely.
7. Now you should have the Java SDK installed. If you want to go through a tutorial on how to use it then look at and follow the instructions at java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/win32.html which is a very good tutorial for getting started with Java.
8. If you have problems downloading the Java 2 SDK try looking at the Frequently Asked Question page.
9. After downloading and installing the Java 2 SDK I recommend also downloading and installing BlueJ, a simple, but useful Interactive Development Environment.
10. If you want to download all 35 megabytes of documentation, which actually isn't a bad idea, go to java.sun.com/docs/index.htmland follow the instructions to download the documentation. The process is similar to the SDK, except you will download a zipped file and have to expand it. If you do not have a program on your computer to zip and unzip files (compress and decompress) try PKZip for Windows which can be downloaded for free. Most of the documentation is in html so if you want to look something up start by clicking on the index web page in the documentation folder after downloading and unzipping the documentation.
